Although Interstate 80
begins at U.S. 101 in
San Francisco, original plans called for the Interstate
to continue west through Golden Gate Park to the Pacific
Ocean near the famous Ocean Beach area. This plan was halted
due to community opposition. As a result, Interstate 80 is a
few miles shorter than originally planned. Since the Central
Freeway viaduct was mostly torn down, Interstate 80 now ends
at the series of U.S. 101 exits near Van Ness Avenue. This
terminus is somewhat in dispute; some say that Interstate 80
actually ends at the Embarcadero exit.

Interstate 80 through
the
Sacramento Valley can be just as crowded as the San
Francisco bay area. The
Sacramento Valley has been going through a population
explosion over the last two decades, and has been slow to
rework it's highway system to accommodate the influx of new
drivers.

With summertime temperatures in the low 90's, and winter time blizzard conditions and 100mph+ winds. Driving Interstate 80 through the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range can be either the most scenic or the most frightening trip of your life. I personally have spent many an hour waiting for traffic control to let us through the gauntlet of the Sierra Nevada. Click here to see the current webcams for the Sierra Nevada's.
